Day 1 - Personal Site

July 1, 2024
Today I’m resurrecting my personal home page. In the past, it included an intro page with a little HTML5 game, a portfolio of apps and projects I worked on in college, and a resume. The content needs a refresh, though I can reuse some of the theme and style choices.
A simple home page, contact form, and blog should be enough for now. The process of throwing together a basic static site with PubStudio isn’t too exciting, so I’ll briefly walk through my process.
  1. Create the site - I’m cheating a bit here by using the PubStudio admin interface to generate a site on the lowest tier plan.
  2. Choose a theme - Experiment with colors, and browse Google fonts. Sometimes I’ll use a tool like https://coolors.com, but this time I decided to wing it.
  3. Lay out the home page - I like to set up the structure of the page first with some placeholders, before filling in the content. When I’m comfortable with a section, I’ll create a reusable style so it’s easy to apply elsewhere.
  4. Contact form - There’s a builtin component for this, so cloning the home page and adding the form is quick.
  5. Responsive design - Briefly test the site at existing breakpoints, and use devtools to view the site preview at different screen widths. Note any UI problems, and adjust accordingly
  6. Blog - The only thing left is to build a simple blog page, and start writing!
The result is the site you’re looking at now - it took longer than expected because I noticed a few bugs in the site builder UI. After tracking them on the builder Github page, I fixed a couple of the more annoying ones and finished up the site.
